Hertford Hedgehog Highway Launch

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

On the 11th March KRA will be launching the first Hertford Hedgehog Highway in Woodlands Road (backing onto Foxholes Ave) and Foxholes Ave backing onto Woodlands Road.

Hedgehog hole in a Kingsmead garden

Hedgehogs are an endangered species: over half of the hedgehogs have disappeared from our land in the last century. There are many reasons for this decline but part of the issue in urban areas is that we have developed better fences and these stop the hedgehogs roaming to find food. Hedgehogs will travel around a mile per night.

The KRA committee has a keen hedgehog enthusiast (Lisa) and has had a Hertford Hedgehog Highway on the agenda for some time, particularly as it is one of the actions on the Kingsmead Neighbourhood Plan Action listing. But, we need to make a full linkage of gardens to provide a route so we thought it better to concentrate on getting a full 'hedgehog street through a set of gardens where hedgehogs are known to live rather than lots of separate holes that don't provide a network.

So, we are launching our first hedgehog street in the Hertford Highway in Foxholes Avenue and Woodlands Road but if anyone would like to be a champion for another area let us know (krahertford@gmail.com) and we will help you with leaflets, advertising and support.

First prize in the poster competition - donated by Cllr Ben Crystall

We have a poster for anyone (all ages welcome) to colour in and display in the window. Copies can be downloaded at the bottom of this article. Please send pictures of your poster to krahertford@gmail.com for our social media campaign

Prizes for the most eye-catching posters are First Prize: Hedgehog hibernation house and Runners Up: Soft toy hedgie made by the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters.

Hedgehog highway signs are available on the day at a cost of £5 full price or £3 discount (discount for anyone with a poster in the window). On the day just look out for the 'Blue Ladies' in the distinctive blue high vis vests.

Runner up prizes and hedgehog hole notices

We also have a two hour window of Jake's (aka Swift Box Installer Extraordinaire) time on the 11th March to make holes in wood or other materials but not concrete base boards* and/or to install the hedgehog signs for a small fee. If you would like assistance in fixing the signs or in making the hole please email krahertford@gmail.com so we have a listing of addresses and can organise Jake's time.

* We will be approaching local suppliers to see if they stock concrete fence baseboards with pre-cut hedgehog holes and will update when we have this information
